The Anatomy of a Camera

In this guided lecture, which can be edited for any level, you will learn the fundamentals of a camera. We begin with the camera obscura, and work our way up from there covering all formats from 35mm to large format 10x8 technical cameras. We look at complex digital menus, mirror and mirrorless cameras. Finally taking it to a deeper level, learning about circles of confusion, nodal points and Scheimpflug’s theorem. This lecture will help you increase creativity and also provide the knowledge to pick up any camera with confidence.

The Anatomy of a Studio

In this lecture you will learn about different lights such as flash, tungsten, LED and HMI and be taken through lighting techniques and Capture One workflows for everything from tabletop photography to an e-commerce fashion shoot and finally on to the basics of car photography. We cover exposure evaluation, colour correction and relevant output recipies. We also explain three phase power supplies, the importance of electrical loading and the dangers lurking within a studio. This lecture is perfect for anyone wishing to start or to extend their professional knowledge with a hands on masterclass from John.

50 Things All Photographers Should Know

Based on a piece of writing by John ( and taken from an idea by Michael Sorkin ) you will discuss all things photographic in a loose and informal manner. From the relevance of the Hungarian Photographers; Mukanski, Kertesz and Moholy-Nagy, to the story of advertising photography, from Edward Steichen to Irving Penn to Nadav Kander. We look at threads of vision, from Walker Evans to William Eggleston, from the Bechers to Andreas Gursky, and from Norman Parkinson to Rankin. An astonishing history, this lecture is for anyone who wants to explore and expand their knowledge of photography for any reason.
